I hope this quick look into different characters of Japanese ghost stories has prompted interest in reading more. Hearn writes excellent and engrossing tales that he is passionate about. If you liked reading any of his work I would reccomend that you also read "Japanese Fairy Tales" It is a very short book but has some interesting stories in it that will keep the reader interested.
In "Glimpses of an Unfamiliar Japan" Hearn takes a look at the fact that although many customs are still practiced they are not believed anymore. He shows disdain for the fact that Western influence is taking away from what he sees as a remarkable culture and way of life. There was even one point in his life where Hearn wished he could travel back to a time when all of these things were honored and respected.
